6DOF VR porn explained
Updated
Most VR porn is 180° video filmed from one spot. You can turn your head, but if you lean in or step sideways the whole scene moves with you. 6DOF (six degrees of freedom) fixes that: the scene stays put in space, so you can move around inside it.
3DOF video vs 6DOF scenes
| Regular 180° video | 6DOF / volumetric | |
|---|---|---|
| Turn your head | Yes | Yes |
| Lean in, step sideways | No — the image moves with you | Yes |
| Walk around the performer | No | Yes |
| How it is made | Two cameras, fixed position | 3D capture of the performer |
| Picture | Real video, up to 8K and beyond | 3D model; less sharp than top video, but you can move |
| Library size | Tens of thousands of scenes | Small, but growing |
What you need
- A 6DOF headset, which is every current standalone and PC headset: Quest 2, 3 and 3S, Pico 4 Ultra, Steam Frame, PS VR2 on PC, Vision Pro.
- Room to move, ideally a clear area of a couple of metres.
- Colour passthrough if you want the performer in your own room: Quest 3 or 3S, Pico 4 Ultra, Vision Pro. More: the best AR and passthrough sites.
Where to find it
- Braindance: volumetric captures of real performers, standalone on Quest 3, 3S and Pico 4 Ultra or on PC. VRPorn.com Premium unlocks eight of its experiences.
- VRPorn.com: lists 6DOF content among its Premium features alongside regular VR video.
- 3D games such as Virt-A-Mate are 6DOF by nature, with animated characters instead of filmed performers.
Should you care?
For now, 6DOF is a bonus, not a reason to choose a site. Libraries are small and the picture is softer than the best 180° video. If you want the most to watch in the sharpest quality, regular 8K video still wins: 8K vs 4K. If presence matters more than resolution, try Braindance through VRPorn.com Premium.
